The Victorian Government conducted an investigation into the use of public land in the Victorian goldfields over a six-year period. This investigation concluded with the declaration of several new and extended national and state parks that have the potential to seriously limit access for those seeking minerals. The PMAV worked doggedly and determinedly during the entire six-year period and managed to retain access for prospectors to most of the area. Unfortunately the story for miners is not as good and miners have lost access to important goldfields as a result of the new parks.

Management plans are being prepared for the new parks. The PMAV is a key stakeholder in the preparation of these plans. Details of the plan preparation timetable is available on Parks Victoria's website. www.parkweb.vic.gov.au

Plans currently in the draft stage include Chiltern - Mt Pilot National Park, Heathcote Graytown National Park, and Paddys Ranges State Park. The final plan for the Castlemaine Diggings National Park has been released with significant concessions for prospectors.
